At 5 Star Day Nursery children are split into groups according to age and their stage of development, these groups are as follows:
Discoverers & Pre-Explorers
Explorers 2 & Inventors
Discoverers & Pre-Explorers
The baby unit at 5 Star Day Nursery is situated upstairs. It is a warm and welcoming room divided into two. We can accommodate 12 babies in the unit. The ratio of staff to babies is 1:3.The staff in the baby unit are qualified and experienced and are able to encourage the babies through their early stages of development. The routine in the baby unit is adaptable to suit the individual needs of the young baby.
The babies have the opportunity to play and explore outside each day. Parents are asked to supply nappies and wipes and any creams required. These are kept in the childrens individual labelled boxes. Parents/carers must provide bottles with a measured amount of boiled water and correct amount of formula, in a separate container, to be mixed by staff when needed. Empty bottles will be returned to parents/carers at the end of their child’s day. Breast milk will be stored accordingly. Babies are given milk feeds provided by their parents. Babies are usually introduced to liquidised food as they are able to cope. Once fully weaned, meals will be introduced after consultation with parent/carer
Explorers 1 is one of our toddler rooms, aged 2-2.5 years. Once the children reach two years old, we implement a more structured routine, encouraging independence and self-confidence into the children by giving them more choices and the chance to thrive. We have a toilet and nappy area conveniently located next door which encourages the children when they start toilet training. Explorers 1 are encouraged to help themselves to fruit and water at the snack bar which is available at all times for the children. A wide range of activities are set out each day including role play, small world, construction, comfy reading area, and various messy activities! Explorers 1 access our outdoor messy area and garden twice a day. Explorers 1 are slowly and gently introduced downstairs to Explorers 2 over a period of 4 weeks to ensure the child is used to their new room, staff and friends. The settle period may take shorter or longer depending on the individual child. However long it takes the staff will make sure that we are working with the child and the parents/carers to ensure a smooth transition before they start full time.
Explorers 2 & Inventors
‘Downstairs we have 3 separate rooms, including an outdoor area. We can accommodate up to 30 children between the ages of 2.5 years – 5 years in the unit. The ratio of staff to children aged 2-3 years is 1:4 and for children aged 3-5 years is 1:8. All areas are clearly defined throughout the rooms, this enforces simple boundaries and a sound routine. The children know where all the resources belong, as well as what is happening throughout the day. The children have access to the snack bar as well as the toilet which is conveniently located in a separate area within the main room.
Explorers 2 are our 2.5 – 3 year olds. They are encouraged to learn through exploration and experimentation with age appropriate toys, resources and materials. The staff plan a range of fun and educational activities, as well as child initiated and free flow play. We focus on activities to develop skills such as communication, self-awareness, independence and co-operation. The children eat healthy meals together and nap after their lunch.
Inventors are our 3-5 year olds. The children take part in fun and educational adult and child led activities, as well as free flow play to prepare them for big school. Our curriculum and staff teaching enhances the children’s confidence to become problem solvers and develop a love of lifelong learning. Through independence and exploration, the children develop a variety of skills and knowledge in all 7 areas of learning. Inventors have free flow into the garden and outdoor messy area. Inventors have a very strong and structured routine and enjoy regular trips and outings. Our staff instil good manners, hygiene, diversity, equality and essential British Values into the children’s daily routine. 5 Star has a very strong and smooth transition process in place for the children from nursery to primary school which enables them to settle nicely into their new school.
5 Star Day Nursery offer after school club for the children up to 8 years. We currently provide the service for children who attend the two local schools, Ferndale Primary School and Hamstead Primary School, however other schools are welcome.
The children who attend after school club will have the option of having a hot tea and late snack. Age appropriate and stimulating activities are planned for the Professors. The children are allocated to a key person who liaises well with the child’s school teacher. The children are escorted from school by foot or escorted by a member of the management team.
